The Sounds of Hemoglobin

The Sounds of Coffee

These tones were created from each molecule’s absorption spectra. These spectra are how chemists identify the atomic makeup of a molecule, in the same way that the line spectra are used to identify the individual atoms.

The data for each spectrum were then converted into a sound file that produced the sound grains used to create the tones produced above.

These are shown as a mirror image. The original data is expressed in terms of wavelength while the audio files are expressed in frequency. The wavelength and frequency have an inverse relationship with each other.

The original audio files produced sound grains. Each individual “note” exists for approximately 50 ms. Any sound must exist for 50 – 60 ms in order for humans to perceive the sound. The graphs above are the spectrum produced by a singular sound grain.
